Why do dark skinned Americans of African decent prefer to be called African Americans ?

Australian Aboriginals prefer to be called Indigenous Australian, my query being a lot of dark skinned people living in America/Australia have some light skinned European ancestors in their past, yet they fail to publically acknowledge that side of their ancestry. why is this so ?
