Is there any tangible reason or benefit to/for "Patriotism"?

I would say socially it would be hard to win a war if you weren't patriotic, and I personally think it's a bunch of crap, but when were in a rut, when someone patriotic like MLK, or Robert Kennedy or during WW2, I think it helps us get out of the depression. Sometimes being patriotic is the only thing you have left.
